Wetlands International is the only global organisation dedicated entirely to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Working across more than 50 countries, the organisation combines science, policy and locally led action to protect some of the world’s most important ecosystems, including mangroves, peatlands, rivers, lakes and coastal wetlands. Wetlands International works with governments, communities and businesses to develop practical, scalable solutions that support biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, enhance water and food security, and improve livelihoods.

UBS Optimus Foundation

With funding from the Levine Family Foundation, awarded via the UBS Optimus Foundation, Wetlands International is accelerating efforts to protect and restore critical wetland ecosystems through its “Wetlands for Life” strategy. The programme focuses on large-scale, community-led conservation and restoration projects that help tackle climate change, biodiversity loss and growing pressure on vulnerable coastal communities.

This support is helping Wetlands International expand its work in flagship wetland landscapes around the world, including mangrove restoration and coastal resilience programmes. These initiatives combine conservation with economic opportunity by supporting sustainable aquaculture, improving food and water security, and strengthening climate resilience for local populations.

The funding also contributes to innovative nature-based solutions, including “Building with Nature” approaches that restore degraded coastlines while protecting communities from erosion and flooding. Wetlands International’s work demonstrates how healthy wetlands can simultaneously store carbon, protect biodiversity and create long-term social and economic benefits for millions of people.

Through collaboration with local partners, governments, businesses and international alliances, Wetlands International is helping drive systemic change for wetlands worldwide — ensuring these ecosystems continue to provide essential benefits for people, nature and climate.
